Who may obatin medical marijuana in Montana?

The patient's physician must complete an assessment of the patient's medical history to make application to the state's mandatory registry. The qualifying patient has a debilitating medical condition and the potential benefits of the medical use of marijuana would likely outweigh the health risks for the qualifying patient.

Approved Medical Conditions:

Cancer, glaucoma, or positive status for HIV/AIDS, or the treatment of these conditions; a chronic or debilitating disease or medical condition or its treatment that produces cachexia or wasting syndrome, severe or chronic pain, severe nausea, seizures, including seizures caused by epilepsy, or severe or persistent muscle spasms, including spasms caused by multiple sclerosis or Chrohn's disease; or any other medical condition or treatment for a medical condition adopted by the department by rule.

Fun Fact:

Montana is the 10th state to pass a medical marijuana law.

Montana's MMJ program:

State law DOES NOT require the patient to apply for a Medical Marijuana Registry identification card;  although, to avoid harassment- we highly recommend it!  At time of application, the patient may provide a "primary care-giver", who upon approval, "controls the acquisition of such medical marijuana and the dosage and frequency of its use by the patient". The state registry is confidential, and state law enforcement may only contact the registry to verify patients and care-givers.

Posession & Cultivation Limits:

Grow for yourself.  State law allows patient or caregiver to grow up to six plants or possess up to one ounce of useable marijuana. Up to 6 plants, no more than 3 in the flowering stage.  May possess up to 1 oz. of marijuana at a time.

Marijuana Dispensaries in Montana:

State law is silent on where grow sites can be located, but similarly to what is happening in Colorado, most major cities now have fully operating retail spaces where one can obtain medicine. See our link for a directory.

Obtain a Montana Registry ID card:
